Logistics Society launches Warehouse course with WDA Certification
=======================================

In another industry first, The Logistics Society has launched a basic warehousing course that not only teaches the theories of warehousing but also teaches and tests trainees in Singapore's first purpose built Warehousing School.

With dedicated testing bays, trainees are taught and tested in an actual warehouse environment with a commercial WMS system. Upon successful completion, trainees are awarded nationally recognised certification from the Workforce Development Agency. With the funding schemes available the costs to company sponsored trainees are almost non-existent and if you want to find out more click on the following link:

Ailing Malaysian Airlines may scrap 737 order
=======================================

As a further indication of the crisis Malaysian Airlines (MAS) is facing, it was announced recently that it may cancel its Boeing 737 aircraft replacement programme as it seeks further ways to cut its costs.

Industry insiders say MAS' current 737s would still be airworthy for a decade, according to an article by Malaysia's Business Times newspaper.

Earlier this year, MAS management asked for proposals from Boeing and Airbus because the company was said to be looking at more than 40 Airbus A320s or Boeing 737-700/800s to replace its 737-400s.

The focus of the replacement programme was to switch MAS' current fleet to more energy efficient aircraft in an effort to counter the effects of rising fuel and maintenance costs.

Officials with knowledge of MAS' current financial situation said scrapping its order may be the airline's best option in light of its current financial situation.

"Rather than looking at replacing the 737-400s with the existing 737-700/800s or Airbus A320s, it would be worth looking at the 787s or the A350s instead," an insider suggested in the article.

OSK research manager Chris Eng disagreed however, and said the carrier should not abandon its replacement programme and that MAS would be better off buying new planes.

"The new-version 737s are more efficient than the old models. In addition, old aircraft requires more maintenance. Using the old aircraft would result in MAS having to incur higher operation costs," he said.

Singapore World's Busiest Port
=======================================

It was announced recently that Singapore is likely to overtake Hong Kong to become the world's busiest container port this year. So far it has handled more than 17 million 20 foot equivalent units in the first 9 months of this year.

Aside from increased throughput, the Singapore government wants to turn Singapore into an international maritime centre and organisations like the Singapore Maritime Foundation and The Logistics & Supply Chain Management Society are at the forefront of this.

To further help achieve this, fiscal incentive schemes have attracted more than 60 international groups to base their operations here. The Singapore Registry of Ships has also moved to become the fifth largest registry in the world with more than 3,100 vessels and the government is also beefing up infrastructure including improving insurance and arbitration services and ship financing.
