Danzas to move under DHL brand name
DANZAS, the logistics subsidiary of Deutsche Post World Net, will conduct its activities under the DHL brand name as of April 1, 2003, with the business units Danzas Eurocargo (European land transport) and Danzas Solutions (supply chain management solutions) being integrated into DHL.
Danzas AEI Intercontinental (air and ocean freight) will continue to operate from Basel under the name DHL Danzas Air & Ocean. The firm said Danzas is to remain a legally separate company.
As part of its group-wide STAR value creation programme, Deutsche Post World Net is reorganising its activities in the areas of Express (now DHL and Euro Express) and Logistics (now Danzas). In the past there has been some overlapping among the group companies, especially in the realm of European land transport, the company said.
Danzas Eurocargo will be integrated into DHL Express and DHL Freight, Danzas Solutions into DHL Solutions. These three DHL units will be managed centrally from Brussels, the present DHL hub.
The new DHL will be headed by Uwe Dorken, present CEO of DHL, and Peter Kruse, now responsible for Euro Express and Danzas in Deutsche Post World Net's management board.
Next year, Danzas AEI Intercontinental will operate under the new brand name DHL Danzas Air & Ocean and current Danzas Group CEO, Renato Chiavi, will become CEO of DHL Danzas Air & Ocean headquartered in Basel.
The present head office in Basel will be downsized to accommodate the management of DHL Danzas Air & Ocean as well as certain support functions. The latter will be designated during the planning phase by those responsible for the DHL support functions.
The company said this also means that some of the jobs at the present Danzas head office will be lost or relocated to Brussels. Many employees will be offered new positions in Brussels, the company said. But actual numbers will become known only upon completion of the conception phase now commencing.
The company added non-European operations of Danzas, known as the Intercontinental Business Unit, will not be affected by the integration.
Applications open for L&SCMS scholarship
APPLICATIONS for the Logistics & Supply Chain Management Society (L&SCMS) scholarship programme is open. Offered for the second year in a row, the scholarships are open to candidates aspiring to pursue their career ambitions in logistics or for those already employed in the industry.
The Society said that it is committed to nurture capable candidates as part of its efforts to raise the level and skill sets of Logistics professionals in the region. The scholarship will also include the opportunity for candidates to visit or be attached to partner training organisations in the region and expose them to how fellow professionals in countries like Australia, New Zealand, India and the Philippines amongst others.
"Logistics and Supply Chain Management needs to be looked at and understood from a global perspective. Cross border and more importantly, cross cultural barriers need to be removed and this is just one way the Society looks to assist in this process." Raymon Krishnan the President of the Society was quoted as saying in a recent interview.
He further went on to say that " since it's inception a year ago, we have found the programme a little 'too successful'. The second scholarship candidate found he liked Perth so much during a learning tour in Australia that he has since successfully found a job and relocated to Perth with his wife and two children from Singapore"
L&SCMS scholarships will be awarded based on individual merits taking into account academic achievement and working experience, the Society said and interested parties can contact the Secretariat at elee@lscms.org to find out more.
473.8% profit for Singapore Airlines
It is not all gloom and doom for the Airfreight industry. Singapore Airlines (SIA), reported its net profits for the six-month period to September 30 rose 473.8 per cent year-on-year to S$774 million (US$435.76 million) compared to S$639 million during the corresponding period in 2001.
Dr. Cheong Choong Kong, SIA deputy chairman and CEO, said: "We made full use of opportunities presented by faster-than-expected recovery of the passenger and cargo markets post September 11, 2001. Unfortunately, in an environment teeming with threats of war, whether we can continue to perform at the same level for the rest of the financial year rests largely on developments beyond our control."
Over the April to September period the airline said it carried 14.4 per cent more in kilograms. It added that over the six month period, Singapore Airline's load-tonne-kilometre figure improved 22.6 per cent compared with 2001 levels and the company said its cargo load factor increased by 5.5 points over the interim to 69.5 points from 64 last year.
